Personal Tax

Personal Tax Accountants in London

Personal tax has become harder to ignore, not easier. Self Assessment deadlines carry automatic penalties, VAT applies once turnover crosses £90,000, and Making Tax Digital for Income Tax now brings more people into digital record-keeping every year.

Get any of it wrong, and what should be routine compliance turns into unplanned cost. Self Assessment runs on fixed deadlines with automatic penalties attached, VAT rules apply the moment your turnover crosses the threshold, and Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now mandatory for many sole traders and landlords, with more people brought into it every year.

The Finance Equation Ltd is an award-winning firm of chartered certified accountants with over 30 years' experience, helping individuals and business owners across London manage their personal tax affairs — accurately, on time, and in a way that keeps as much of what they earn as legally possible. It's one part of our wider taxation services, alongside company taxation, property tax, tax planning and tax investigations support.

Fixed deadlines, automatic penalties — we make sure yours is filed accurately and on time, every year.

Built Around You

Personal Tax Planning Built Around You

Running a business well and managing your personal tax well are two different skills, and few people have time to be expert at both.

Our personal tax advisory service starts with a thorough review of your current financial position and your plans — not a generic checklist — so every decision, from how you draw income to how you structure investments, is made in the most tax-efficient way available to you.

We keep you ahead of current regulatory requirements and forthcoming legislative changes, so tax planning happens before a decision is made, not as a reaction afterwards. Whether you need ongoing tax planning, support through an HMRC enquiry, or a one-off review of your position, we bring 30 years of experience to work through it with you — in plain English, not jargon.

Fixed Dates, Automatic Penalties

Self-Assessment, Done Properly and On Time

If you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return, the deadlines are fixed and the penalties for missing them are automatic.

Step 1

Register by 5 October

Following the end of the tax year you need to report, or you risk missing the filing deadlines that follow.

Step 2

Paper returns by 31 October

The earlier of the two filing deadlines, for anyone submitting a paper Self Assessment return.

Step 3

Online returns by 31 January

Along with any tax owed — you'll face a penalty even if no tax is actually due. See HMRC's Self Assessment deadlines.

Miss the online filing deadline and an initial £100 penalty applies automatically, with further daily and six-month charges the longer it runs on. We handle the whole process — registering you with HMRC, reviewing your financial information to make sure you're claiming every relief you're entitled to, and submitting a timely, accurate return on your behalf.

A Bigger Change Under Way

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

A phased rollout brings many more sole traders and landlords into digital record-keeping and quarterly reporting, rather than a single annual return.

£50k+ From April 2026

Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000.

£30k+ From April 2027

The threshold extends to qualifying income over £30,000.

£20k+ From April 2028

And again to qualifying income over £20,000, bringing many more people in.

If that sounds like a bigger administrative burden, it is — which is exactly where having the right accountant and the right software in place before your mandate date matters most. Full detail is in HMRC's Making Tax Digital overview.

The Foundation

Bookkeeping and Financial Information You Can Rely On

Good bookkeeping isn't paperwork for its own sake — it's the foundation everything else is built on, from your Self Assessment return to spotting a cash flow problem early. We record your financial transactions using industry-recognised, cloud-based software, keeping your records accurate, organised and available whenever you need them, not just at year-end.

Records That Hold Up

What clean bookkeeping gives you

Every transaction needs supporting documentation HMRC can ask to see.

Clean, current records are also what turn into the reports and trends that actually help you make decisions — not just satisfy a compliance requirement.

Staying Ahead of the Rules

Cloud-based records, reviewed regularly — so Making Tax Digital is a formality, not a scramble.

Where It Catches People Out

VAT Services

VAT catches out more individuals and businesses than almost any other area of tax, because the rules apply differently depending on your turnover, your industry and whether you trade internationally. If your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, you must register for VAT within 30 days of the end of the month you crossed the threshold — miss it, and you'll still owe VAT on everything sold from the date you should have registered.

Once registered, you're required to submit returns even in periods where no VAT is due or reclaimable, and almost all VAT-registered businesses must follow Making Tax Digital rules, filing electronically through compatible software rather than on paper. We manage VAT registration, quarterly returns and the underlying calculations, so you stay compliant and don't pay a penny more than you have to.

When HMRC Raises a Query

Staying On the Right Side of HMRC

Getting things wrong — even unintentionally — carries real consequences, and the scale of the penalty depends entirely on the behaviour behind it.

Careless or Routine Error

Standard penalty regime

Up to 100%

Of the extra tax due, depending on behaviour — well before a case ever becomes a serious one.

Deliberate Concealment

Offshore non-compliance

Up to 200%

Of the tax due in the most serious cases — with criminal investigation, asset seizure and director disqualification reserved for deliberate fraud, not honest mistakes.

That's exactly why staying proactive matters more than reacting after the fact. Our accountants keep you ahead of your annual returns, advise on the most tax-efficient position available to you, make sure deadlines are met, and — if HMRC does raise a query — correspond with them directly on your behalf, so you're never left explaining yourself alone.
